I wrote this report with former Washington Post executive editor Leonard Downie Jr. It makes the case for fair, accurate and unbiased reporting in the contemporary newsroom, where the traditional standard of “objectivity” has lost much of its credibility with journalists and news consumers. Working with a small team of researchers from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at ASU and supported by The Stanton Foundation, we interviewed more than 75 news leaders, practicing journalists, and other experts. The report concludes with a six-point “playbook” for changing newsroom culture and building trustworthy journalism.
